Whether for a week or a weekend, vacations are a time to relax, recharge and have fun. During the past year, the pandemic limited travel and many people took advantage of domestic travel options. Road trips to national and state parks increased and so did camping.
This year, increased COVID-19 vaccinations have resulted in increased travel. But while travel habits are changing, many say that camping has been revitalized and will continue to thrive even though international travel destinations may open soon.
For those of us who did not grow up camping, the thought of living a primitive lifestyle can be intimidating. But it can be easier than it seems. If you’re new to camping or if you haven’t been in years and want to give it a try, besides a sleeping bag, here are some popular camping essentials that will allow you to camp in comfort.
Reusable water bottles
Camping involves a lot of physical activity which can be exhausting. You’ll want to make sure that you have plenty of water available to stay hydrated. A reusable water bottle will come in handy.
Lanterns, glow sticks or a good old fashioned flashlight
Light is necessary for walking around in the evening or finding your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Be sure to keep one or more of these light sources handy.
Chairs
Chairs are a comfort item. They are great for relaxing after a walk, sitting down to read or pausing to take a breath of fresh air.
Backpack
Backpacks are a great way to carry everything you need for your hike in one bag. This is an easy way for adults and kids to bear the weight of belongings on their back and it leaves the arm free for other things.
A fire starter
If you plan on cooking over a campfire or roasting smores, you may need a firestarter. This can be fetched in the woods, store bought or home made with dryer lint and toilet paper rolls. Remember to bring enough for the full length of your stay.
Compass and map
I’ve read many stories about avid hikers getting lost and unable to find their way back to camp. Bringing a compass and map will help you know where you are and find your way back if needed.
Animal proof container
One of the worse things that can happen when camping is an animal getting into your food. Bears can smell food from miles away! You’ll want to make sure that you have your food stored in an airtight container to reduce your chances of having any unexpected visitors.
Shower or shower sheets
If you are boondocking, having a portable shower comes in handy. Shower sheets or wipes are another option to explore.
Phone chargers
Although reception can be spotty or even non-existent when camping, you’ll want to bring along some portable chargers to keep your phone charged for non-cellular or internet required games or reading apps. Octopus chargers are a life saver! They allow you to use one charger to connect to multiple device inputs. A portable solar generator and solar panels will allow you to recharge your electronics multiple times.
Portable toilet
Campgrounds will have bathrooms available for use. For those who choose to boondock, you can either dig holes, use a portable toilet or try a bucket with a seat cover on top. Don’t forget to bring trash bags and kitty litter.
Other things to remember to pack:
Bug spray
Pocket knife
Portable table
Pro Tip: When camping, remember to Leave No Trace. Protect our forests by taking away everything that you brought with you. Find out more about the Leave No Trace program from the National Park Service at https://www.nps.gov/articles/leave-no-trace-seven-principles.htm.
Camping can be a fun solo, couples or family adventure. Thinking ahead can help you plan a comfortable and memorable trip.
