After making several trips to U.S. National Parks, I’ve made a few observations that enhance the overall journey. Here’s some tips you may want to consider as you plan your next visit.
Stay Longer
The national parks are massive and there’s no way you can experience all they have to offer in just one day. Sure, you may be able to visit some of the most popular points in the park, but there are some hidden gems that you will certainly miss on a one day trip. Plan ahead to ensure you spend enough time in the park to enjoy all it has to offer.
Pro Tip: Plan to spend at least one hour at each point of interest.
Stay For Night Activities
Some parks have night activities such as stargazing and night time campfires. After spending a full day in the park, it might be tempting to leave and skip this part of the experience. If you make your park visit longer, you can pace yourself and maybe leave the park early, get some rest, and come back to enjoy an evening in the park.
Pro Tip: Don’t forget to bring a flashlight to see and a jacket to stay warm at night.
Don’t Skip the Visitor’s Center
The national park visitor centers are more than just stores to purchase souvenirs. They have a wealth of information about the parks and their unique features. Park Rangers are available to answer any questions about navigating the park and can give you tips on the best trails, time to allot for your planned activities and park safety tips.
Pro Tip: Traveling with kids? Sign them up for the park ranger program.
Use Park Maps
Unless you’re near the visitor’s center, expect to lose all reception when you’re in a national park. Park maps will be your best friend when trying to find your way whether you’re in a car or on foot. So sharpen your map reading and navigation skills and get ready for an adventure!
Pro Tip: For your safety, remember to stay on paved roads or designated trails.
